  1. I'm from France, and I can tell you that Paris is not really safe, but I won't say crime is high.

During the day, you will have no pb, during night and evening it's OK if you avoid suburb districts, but I guess you will not have to go in suburb if you will go to Paris downtown as a tourist so you will visit most beautiful parts of the city.

But consider that Paris is as safe as big cities, such London, New-York, Chicago, Los Angeles. So look after your stuffs in subway and hide your money.

  2. Other than domestic violence there is almost no violent crime in central Paris and almost no crime at all that affects tourists except for pickpockets.

Violent stranger on stranger crime is almost exclusively found in the poverty stricken suburbs to which the mainly non-white and Muslim poor have been relegated by government social planning.

The statistics you have read are probably true but the geographic distribution of crime is such that it will not affect a tourist.

  3. There's lots of petty theft, so many tourists draw thieves from everywhere in Europe. There's little physical aggression as the number of policemen is very high, Paris centre is one of the safest place in France! So if you are careful about your wallet and bag - no outside pockets, tell your gf to keep her bag close, don't let go of your camera (wrist strap, wrist strap, wrist strap!) - you have little risk of finding yourself with no money, papers and camera.

At night, you have to be a bit more careful like in every big city. For areas to avoid, ask at your hotel. Mostly you won't have any reason to go there.

  4. When I was there i Felt very safe. There are LOTS of police by the Arc De Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and other major tourist attractions. Just be VERY careful on the metro. Also dont give ANY money to those AWFUL  Arabian women who beg you then pull out their CELL PHONE!!!!! Dont be worried about safety, the gun rate is extremly low and the WORST thing that could happen is you get pickpocketed and that is not the end of the world. Just make sure to use the safe in your hotel room if you have one and only carry $ that you need ENJOY YOUR TRIP!!!!!!!!

  5. Street robbery is very common. Hold on to your bags.

  6. Paris is like London,it has a lots of foreign residents.

So keep your hands on your wallet and purse.

  7. Paris like most french cities has a lot of petty crime going on. Theft is not uncommon and tourists are always an easy target.

Groups of young people can be ....well, just the same as the UK. Drugs (weed) is very common in the streets.

Basic tips: get a copy of your passport with you and keep the original + important papers safe.

The areas to avoid are located for the most in the outskirt of Paris (the Seine St Denis is particularly reknown to be very bad, as a gang area) and places of prostitution + drug dealing areas (rue St Denis, les Halles). As far as I can remember, Paris is safe during day time.

Be careful with hand bags, wallets and so on, keep it tight or safe and not easily reachable.

Tramps, beggars and or unsociable groups of the kind can be fairly aggressive when begging, although it's mainly verbal (no ASBO in France yet). Many french people can be aggressive when driving as well.

If you behave as you would normally, you should not have any problem.

  8. ive been there and happily walked along small darkish roads with no problem, paris is a tourist pot of gold for the french govt so the place has no shortage of police. i found the place very clean and safe. paris must have lower crime than the rest of france.

  9. When you read things about high crime in Paris it is usually only out in the suburbs, not in the city. Anytime I go there I have walked around at night on my own and felt safe. I find it a lot safer that London or Dublin. Most of the city is usually busy with tourists all day, and even on your own it’s still safe.

The Metro is usually safe and busy at night too. But as with all major cities, don’t let your guard down. But don’t think about it, relax and enjoy your holiday in the best City in the world.
