  1. wow...only grannyTOP CONTRIBUTOR made sense

    i can't believe my eyes and what im reading

    if you noticed,most people who spoke bad of s.a dont live here anymore just because they probably had their own experiences that are bad or they probably heard of 1 they think every person here is in danger"or should i say every caucasian is in danger"

    well first of all im a moroccan, my fiance is a caucasian ...if you in go to a bad area with no security obviously your chances of being robbed are huge..... it applies to every nation!! do you expect me to believe that every in he u.s is safe???

    if we are so endangered then why the h**l do people here have time to sit on chairs to answer your questions?

    you are young and lively...why must you let such myths get to you? if south africa wa so unsafe then why do you still feel lie coming here? im sure you have seen most beautiful views of s.a.....so you want to tell me that all those places have thieves and gangs waiting for you to start speaking your american accent and stab you? what the f####k?

    i cant believe people are so stupid.....

    well about you coming alone...i just think any trip to a new country alone for  an adventure is boring

    someone should be with you...why dont you get someone your age...or may be a travel agency that will tour guide with other people then you can have lots of pics filled with people that went there on their first jerney too.

    even going to the mall alone sometimes gets boring,,,,now imagine a new country and coming alone?

    wel thats all up to you to decide just rather speak to  people that have visited south africa and their experiences...

    my opinion ive never heard of a contry with no crime at all. whites being stabbed????? woooow in 2008???? its been about 9 years not hearing about major attacks like those....stealing?????? if you leave your bag and go some where im sure even in the u.s.a 0.0001% that you will find it there...if you keep your things safe..then i dont know why worry

    you will never visit any country with that type of mind set and the negativity people feed you with.....

  2. There has been some racial issues there. just like U.S. but since white people were more in USA they killed blacks, in South Africa there are more Blacks so they usually get to kill whites. But its not something that happens everyday. Don't go to bad neighborhoods and stay in nicer more touristy places and at the beach. South Africa is a great country. Try to go during summer of 2010 because there is gonna be a Football (soccer)  World Cup there and its gonna be awesome.

  3. having traveled to South Africa before, I would not advise you to travel by yourself since u r a lady, young and a tourist. I would only adivse if u do go there remain in one of the major cities and try not not go out late at nights and remain in larger groups of people and inform the embassy that you are visiting the country for a while.

    hope it helps

  4. Nicole.

    Lets put it this way, I am a white south african currently in the US with a tourist visa. I am thinking about applying for a loan of $60 000 to study here because the thought of having to go back is horrifying. Please, i beg you, dont put your life on the line. DONT GO. DO MORE RESEARCH and you will soon discover that it just does not make sense. Good luck.

    nicole you can contact me through email if you desire. I am south african and i know what im talking about.

  5. this is so lame coming from an american. it`s just like an african saying he is scared to visit america because men dressed in sheets with burning crosses will hang him.

  6. You need to appreciate that South Africa has a Communist Government who preach anti US and anti White (caucasian) propaganda almost by the day.Everything that goes wrong is blamed on "the legacy of colonialism" which all Blacks understand to be Whites.The result of this is that Whites are 5 times more likely to be the victims of violent crime than any other Race.

    To add to your problem you will be targetted as a Tourist by the gangs that operate out of the Airports. They usually loot your luggage as it is transferred from the Airline. Another MO is for the Customs Official to advise by cellphone awaiting criminals outside of your description and how much money you are carrying (you are required to declare this upon arrival). You will then be followed from the Airport and attacked on the roads at gunpoint.

    Going alone? You are mad.It is not a case of "if" you will be a victim of crime but "when." Have a read of this site:

  7. The USA has a higher murder rate than South Africa.

    Like at home you just have to be careful and sensible.

  8. Put your life on the line??!!   FYI, I have felt more afraid in the US than anywhere else in the world, knowing that 80% of people are armed with guns.  I hate the paranoid airport security and the ultra biased media.......don't believe everything you see on CNN.

    Anyway, some common sense tips:  It would be nice if you could travel with a friend......more interesting overall, somebody to share laughs and experiences with.

    Exercise caution the same as you would at home or in Europe.  Don't flash your money.  Don't wear expensive jewellery.  Think well of people.  Support local businesses and restaurants.

    Take Granny R. up on her offer to contact her for advice.

    Enjoy yourself, have fun!

  9. simplest answer dont go

  10. I agreee with Pitso.  I have friends who are from the US working for Peace Corp in South Africa. I'm talking about white girls with Blonde hair and blue eyes living in the township (ghetto) with black families and everyone in that community respects them because they teach young kids in the local schools and alsowork in some orphanage. They have been living there for almost 2 years.  They take the local taxis to town to visit the other friends in thir group.  If you work for Peace Corp (USA government organization that assist South african previously disadvantage communities) they get allocated to any town or township. I think you should really speak to your government and findout more information from them.  P.S we don't have 6 year olds carrying guns to school just like the US.

  11. I would not put you off coming to South Africa, its a great country, and people blow things way out of proportion.  I would suggest that you look into visiting Cape Town and Durban instead of Johannesburg.

  12. My boyfriend and his family are from there. We actually just had a conversation about the town. Everyone they know from that town has either been stabbed, raped or has had a bad experience along those lines. Even  him and his family has had those experiences. A few years ago it was pretty much a white rule. And then they changed up the laws so there had to be a mixed ratio of people in power. Than people who weren't qualified started getting to in powerful positions and businesses started crumbling. Communities are gated. There are panic buttons in rooms, every room has locks on it. I'm sure if you were to talk to people who live there it's a life style that they are used to, but are always looking over their shoulders. I know i'm probably making it sound worse than it really is just because I hear horrible stories of their family and friends getting shot, stabbed and raped. It's a serious problem there and I suggest going to other places. Apparently Cape Town is a much safer place to go. I'm sure ifyou talk with a travel agent they can tell you were to go and where not to go. Just be safe!

  13. Don't go. The ANC has no control over security in SA.

  14. Nicole L..............

    I have read all the comments thus far, and am quite shocked at the large number of negative comments because I actually do stay in South Africa, and I am a Caucasian woman, and I can tell you this;

    I suppose that many young black South Africans have developed a "bad attitude", and on the road, I have seen black folks drive like idiots and I have seen road violence, but mostly, if you stick to your own business, and do not bother them, they will ot bother you, like it is in any other city in the world....

    I stay in the rural Central South Africa where we do not have so many people in cities but rather we have towns with great distances between them, so there is not such a big concentration of people living close to each other, which helps, but I have never had any real problem to talk about.

    Please come over for a visit

    Edit;

    Unlike some others who actually NO LONGER LIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA, I still do, and I still go shopping on my own and I still drive to church every Sunday, and I still attend functions and I must tell you that I have NEVER had any problem at all with black or white people...

    Now you e-mail me and I will give you a list of places to avoid and a list of places to visit which is quite safe and quite nice to go to.....

    Hugs;

    Gran
