It’s not yet clear how long Dinara Safina’s recurring back injury – which forced her withdrawal at the Tour Championships in Doha in 2009, and the 2010 Australian Open – will keep the world No. 2 off the court. Speaking immediately after retiring from her fourth round match at Melbourne Park, Safina said she needed to go back to Germany to speak with her doctor but that an MRI before she came to the Australian Open showed the bone edema in her back was getting much smaller. So it’s diagnosis pending for the luckless Russian.
