  1. I think 'p' is progressive like progressive scan and 'i' is for interlaced.  I think theoretically 1080p is better but shows or dvd aren't filmed in high enough quality to make a difference.  Not sure though.

  2. All I can tell you is that 1080i shows a frequency of 30 on my TV and 1080p shows a frequency of 60. I believe this may have to do with frames per second but I'm not sure.

  3. The two refer to different video encoding schemes used with HDTV. Let's start with the 1080. 1080 refers to the vertical lines of resolution in the picture. With either format you are seeing 1080 lines at a time, as a sidenote there are 1920 vertical bars, but resolution is not measured this way. The difference comes in with the way in which the lines are drawn on your screen, let's start with 1080i.

1080i means that the picture is interlaced. Old SD television is interlaced, this means that at a particular time, the screen is only actually drawing every other line; a single field contains 540 lines and one field is displayed at a time. This is fine for images that are generally static, however with high motion pictures, such as sports, the picture changes between the two fields and you may see what is referred to as scan lines. This is where the two fields differ in some place and they picture does not line up.

1080p means that the picture is progressive, the entire picture is displayed at once, from top to bottom. This requires significantly more bandwidth and is therefore only used with HD playback discs such as Blu-Ray. Television signals are not broadcast in higher than 1080i and some networks choose to broadcast at 720p, which means that there are 720 lines of resolution, and they are displayed progressively.

1080p will generally give a crisper looking picture than 1080i, however there are many factors that can affect this, such as viewing distance, and even the images' content itself. TV's that are capable of displaying 1080p will be able to take full advantage of blu-ray players' abilities, but don't think for a second that your 1080i TV won't be able to display a blu-ray disc.

  4. the i and the p duh

  5. 1080i and 1080p.

They're diffrent versions of TV Diffenition, other known as High Definion.  1080p is higher than 1080i, that's basically all you need to know. 1080p > 1080i. 1080p is more sharper, etcetc.

  6. 1080i is 1080 lines of resolution interlaced.  That means you only see half (540) line at a time, but it is scanning so fast it looks like a solid picture.  everyother line o nthe first scan and then the inbetween lines on the next scan.  It sometimes causes flickr.

1080p is 1080 lines of resolution progressive scan, meaning it scans all 1080 lines from top to bottom at the same time resulting in a clearer picture.
