  1. 2 strokes take more maintenance IE. pistons and rings and make loads of noise but give outstanding power four stroke have loads of torque easier to maintain and are a lot quieter but don't give the speed a two stroke gives

  2. Torque, a two stoke by design makes power on every revolution, where the the 4 stroke is every other.  Easy math, a 125cc two stroke is for argument sake, the equivalent horse power of a 250 cc four stroke.  Thus a smaller engine, less weight etc...

4 strokes are harder to maintain and service.  2 strokers are much easier to rebuild.

For the "burn alot of gas" .  Who cares?  Off-Road bikes are just plain fun to ride.

  3. Sounds like you're asking what's the difference between a 2-cycle and a 4-cycle engine, yes?

A 2-cycle engine is mechanically simpler.  However my experience is that they run dirtier and use more fuel because the oil is mixed with the gas, that mixture is what lubricates the engine, and they tend to be set to run richer.  The engine is easier to maintain but it has to be done more often.

A 4-cycle engine is mechanically more complex because you have valves and an oil pump.  But they run smoother, are quieter, and tend to be more fuel efficient.

  4. 4 strokes are not harder to maintain, you just have one extra thing that needs to be checked/adjusted and that is valve clearance. I can't really speak to the gas consumption question, just never considered that to be an issue on a recreational vehicle. The biggest difference between the two in terms of racing would be winning and losing. You ain't gonna win on a 2 stroke...period.
