The difference in the three cars are options and appearance.The GTS has more equipment than the other two.Check out web site for the Lancers and you can see.I have two 2008 ES and they are nice cars.The GTS is the model up from the ES.The DE is like bare bone but still a nice car.

you're in the 2009 model year now and the difference is that the GTS has the 2.4 liter engine while the DE and ES have the 2.0 liter.  the GTS has the alloy wheels and 18 inch tires

in 2008 all models had the 2.0 engine; the GTS had the 18" alloy and the rear spoiler; the ES has 16" alloy and no spoiler the DE is basic wheel covers on 15" wheels.

in terms of the body style the 2008 and 2009 are identical

interior options are upgraded on the GTS as well

GTS:

Upgraded Interior

Front Air Dam, Side Skirts, and Spoiler

Fog Lights

Paddle Shifters(CVT only)

18" wheels with 10 spoke(I think)

ABS with all four disc brakes

with Optional SS and navigation and such...

ES:

Original Interior

No exterior look

16" 5 Spoke Alloy rims

DE:

No ABS(maybe there is? but heard there was none) with Front Disc brakes and rear are Drum brakes

It really doesn't matter what trim you get. For example: If you want ES for cheaper price but want the body kits and foglights and such. They will install it for you and put the cost with your monthly. It will equal as nearly as a GTS at the end though. But this is only for features and options. I wouldn't get a DE because it probably doesn't come with ABS braking system and has rear drum brakes, thats all.

Right now the new 2009 GTS has a "New Engine" 2.4L as for the 2008 GTS has "2.0L". Which makes it a slightly big difference in performance... and maybe gas?
