  1. To elaborate further, both SD and HD can be either 2d or 3d. In America there is no 3d content. In Japan there is a very little bit of 3d content. Though the principle is old (dating from the 40's) the technology relating to Home Theater is brand new.

The trick to getting a 3d image is to show each eye a different version of the same scene. At one time this was done using red and blue filter glasses. This was hard on the eyes and resulted in a black and white image.

In modern times there are two ways to get separate images to each eye. One way is to use some sort of shutter (usually LCD) to alternately block one eye than the other. As the screen shows the image for the left eye the right eye is blocked, and vise-versa. The other way is to use polarization. One image is polarized vertically and the other horizontally. Both images are shown on the screen at the same time. Glasses are worn with polarizing lenses so each eye sees the proper image.

  2. 3D is a visual presentation attempting to recreate moving images in the three dimensions, usually with the help of 3D glasses.

HD refers to high-definition video, which is better than standard-defintion video and commonly uses higher display resolutions.
