When I was buying my domain, it gave me the option of selecting an OS.

I decided to go with Linux, but is there any major difference?

Can you also assign file permission on Windows?

  1. As far as features, they can both do most of the same, just in different ways. Linux Servers do not support ASP.NET,  while most Windows servers will not run PHP (most...some are able to).

Personally, I think ASP.NET is a quite a bit more powerful than PHP, but that's just because you can use several different languages, and Visual Studio makes development so much easier. Also, ASP.NET has some very awesome bundled features such as the ability to program a login script in very short amount of time. PHP is a little less overwhelming though, and still an extremely versatile and powerful language.

Windows servers are generally quite a bit more expensive to buy space on than Linux, though.

If you are just hosting a small-time website, the difference won't be noticeable. You will pull everything off on one that you would the other. If you start developing enterprise level web applications though, you should probably take a harder look at the differences between the two and what you hope to get out of it.
