THEhotel is just a separate part of Manalay Bay.  Yes it is an entirely separate hotel, but it is owned by Mandalay and is on the same property.

Several Hotels on the strip have a upscale version of the basic room with service and quality advantages that come at a price.  Another one is MGM's Grand Suites.  THEhotel is part of the Mandalay Bay complex and has all the ease of access afforded guests of Mandalay Bay.  The quality of the standard rooms and overall experience has been enhanced to attract a more demanding customer than the Mandalay attracts.  Basically I suggest you look at all your options when planning a vacation to Las Vegas Strip.  Location of all Mandalay Complexes are at the southern end, which creates a transportation issue.  Also, I think if you check the comments listed on several websites you will find that THEhotel at Mandalay Bay does have a better overall satisfaction rate than the main hotel.  The extra cost of THEhotel (did I mention it is more expensive) puts it in line with some of the 4 & 5 star hotels up and down the strip.  Shop wise.

Mandalay Bay has a hotel with a casino connected to both TheHotel and Four Seasons Hotel.  You can stay at any and enjoy the gaming atmosphere of The Bay.

Practically all the major hotels use a brand name to distinguish their newer and more upscale hotel towers from the main hotel. MGM Grand has Signature Suites, the Loft, for instance.

The MGM-Mirage corporation owns about ten casinos on the strip, including almost every casino between Las Vegas Blvd and Interstate 15 (except for Ceasars). So it is all one giant company anyway.
