Whats the difference between Sonys official HDMI and a cheap HDMI cable?

Apparently, I heard the official Sony HDMI cable is best for PS3 for better quality and a sharper image. I'm currently using a cheap HDMI cable and wondering if I should upgrade to the Sony HDMI.

Stay away from Monster Cables.  Never buy them.  They are snake oil.

Absolutely nothing signal-wise... HDMI signals are digital, so as long as the cable can carry 1s and 0s (abstraction but you get the idea) it'll work perfectly.

I use www.monoprice.com with a very high end system - works fine on short runs (up to 1m).

On long runs I use more expensive cables - I had some picture loss with the cheaper ones.

If your run is under .. 15 ft, you likely wont see any difference.

Do you see 'sparkles' on black areas of the screen? On longer runs with cheap cables this is a sign of bit-errors.  A cable with thicker inner wires tends to solve this.

I would recommend Monster Brand cables. Better overall shielding to keep out interference also if you go with the 1000 series it has a higher transfer rate than other HDMI cables so to send your signal from your DVD player to your television more fluently. Gold plated connection tips also help. The point is to pass the signal from point A to point B without losing signal and blocking interference. Hope this helps.

if your getting picture and sound thought the cheaper hdmi then your all set no need to buy a different cable(if its a 1080p tv and you are able to watch blu ray at that resolution then great).  Wire company's make lots of money making you think that you need to but super high end cables when truth be told you dont.
