  1. Now, there's no difference because the wall that divided the country has been removed and the country is now unified and is known as Germany.

  2. the side on the left has a "w" in the name.

  3. Currently, there is none - it's all one country. For nearly 50 years  following WWII (1946-90), German was divided between East and West, with the Warsaw Pact (mainly the Soviet Union) controlling the East and NATO (mainly the US) controlling the West. Berlin was similarly divided from 1961-89, with the Berlin Wall as the separator.

  4. At the time: Communism. The DDR was a communistic state. Many citizens tried to leave. As a result, the Grenztruppen was founded. 47,000 men guarded the border. If you shot a refugee trying to escape, you'd get a gold watch. 37 Grenztruppen soldiers were killed while trying to defect.

If you are interested in the DDR, as I am, here's something you might find interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaIjxpDFD...

    Thats the DDR's anthem.

  5. I believe that the movie, Good Bye Lenin! could answer your question quite well, it is not only historically accurate but very entertaining.
