Whats the difference between a Cyclone and Hurricane???

me and my mom were jus discussing it and she told me to look it up. is a cyclone on top of the water or something im preety confused bcuz they sound the same to me

  1. These terms are a bit tricky, depending on to what they refer.  A cyclone (note lower case lettering) is ANY rotating area of low pressure.  Thus a hurricane, tornado, mid latitude low, etc...are all cyclones, and a hurricane is one particular type of cyclone.

    A Cyclone (note capitalization) is the same thing as a hurricane, but the location of it is different.  Cyclones occur over the North Indian Ocean, while hurricanes occur over the north Atlantic basin, as well as the northeast Pacific Ocean. Otherwise they are the same type of tropical cyclone.


  2. Cyclones and Hurricanes both refer to the same tropical revolving storms.Those which form over Indian ocean are called Cyclones and those which form over the North Atlantic or North-east Pacific are called hurricanes.There is a slight difference in the criteria for wind speed.

    If the wind speed is equal or above 34 knots,the system is declared as Cyclone whereas Hurricanes require a minimum of 64 knots.
