  1. HDMI is the best, and it is also the most expensive cable.

Component and VGA are pretty much equivalent, component is found in home theater set ups, and VGA are use for computer to hd TVs and computer monitors. I have the VGA cable for my xbox 360 and it looks great

  2. Just as a side comment, video connectors are somewhat like looking at a history book.

    In rough chronological order:

    1) 300 ohm twinlead RF

    2) 75 ohm coaxial RF

    3) RCA phono cable composite video

    4) RGB in various computer forms (SVGA, etc.)

    5) S-Video cable

    6) Component video cable

    7) DVI (and its variants)

    8) HDMI

The next step may be HDMI over-the-air, called WirelessHD, which doesn't require cables at all.  The age of the spaghetti pile of cables behind your home theater system may be near an end.

  3. HDMI is the best choice b/c you get HD sound and video all in one cable. Both component and VGA need seperate audio sources which come in handy when using surround sound. All cables are going to give you the same quality picture.
