  8. A little extension on Stop and stare's explanation. Chicken is the group name but a hen is any type of female bird - poultry, duck, ostrich, emu etc. of any age. Chicken is also used as a term for the offspring(babies) of domestic poultry, a bit like the terms calves or foals - no gender bias :)
