  1. where they originate.

    Hurricane-starts in the atlantic ocean

    Tornado-starts over any land mass

    cyclone-start in the indian ocean

twister-just another name for a tornado but is most commonly used in the mid-west.

  2. It's partly down to where you are.

In the southern hemisphere our storms go round clockwise, so we call them cyclones, and they wipe us out.

In the west Indies they call cyclones (which go round the other way in their area) "hurricanes".

    In China they're Typhoons.

In Oz we have small, fast-rotating storms, which we call "willy-willies". The Yanks call them "tornadoes", and with enormous originality "twisters".

  3. a hurricane is a violent tropical cyclone with winds moving at 73 or more miles per hour, often accompanied by torrential rains, and originating usually in the West Indian region

a tornado is a violently whirling column of air, with wind speeds of about 100 to 300 miles per hour, extending downward from a cumulonimbus cloud, esp. in Australia and the central U.S.: usually appearing as a rapidly rotating, slender, funnel-shaped cloud and typically causing great destruction along its narrow path

a cyclone is a windstorm with a violent, whirling movement; tornado or hurricane

Meteorol. a system of rotating winds over a vast area, spinning inward to a low pressure center (counterclockwise in the N Hemisphere) and generally causing stormy weather: commonly called a low, since it coexists with low barometric pressure

a twister is an informal name for a tornado or cyclone
