  1. long-board is easier

  2. Long board is more stable, thus easier to learn. then go shorter

  3. Best board to learn on is a midlength board. Exactly what it sounds like, it's between a long and shortboard.

A longboard will do to learn on, but it's a bit overkill. You'll be ok paddling and balancing but using your weight to manuever it is harder than it looks (and to do it in style, which is the essence of longboarding, harder still).

Shortboards are the worst to learn on. You won't get far, you'll get frustrated.

Best option is take up something else. Too many surfers already and not enough waves!

  4. As already stated, a longboard is longer, wider, and thicker, making it more stable and easier to stand up on.

A shortboard is NOT ALSO CALLED A FUNBOARD. Someone wrote that, and that's wrong.

There are boards called funboards. They are inbetween a shortboard and a longboard, with a different shape than a shortboard. These are good transitional boards, going from a longboard to a shortboard.

A shortboard is smaller and less stable, making it harder to surf on but easier to maneuver.

If you are just learning, rent a longboard and take it out to a place with gentle waves to surf on.

  5. long board is easy to learn on b/c you have more room and is easy to stand up on. A short board also called a fun board are best for waist high shore break waves. I am 5'10 and find it easier to surf on a long board.

  6. Long board is like surfing on a coffee table as opposed to trying to balance on, say, a boogie board. The difference is definitely the easiness factor. But if you want to be able to do tricks and get really good you'll need to learn on a short board!
