  1. Peer-reviewed journals are generally considered much more reliable than non-peer-reviewed journals.  That's because your paper is sent to someone else in the field, you don't know who, and your methods and conclusions are closely checked and perhaps duplicated to make sure they are correct.  Sure, sometimes mistakes get by, but it doesn't happen too often.  For non-peer-reviewed journals, anyone can send something in and no one is checking to make sure it's correct before publishing it.


  2. Peer review undergoes review by your peers (i.e. other doctors, lawyers, researchers in the field).  Non peer review don't undergo the scrutiny of others and are more often editorials or opinion pieces or articles that simply weren't subject to peer review.
