  1. An amplifier simply takes an incoming signal, and makes it stronger.

A receiver includes an amplifier, and also includes extra features such as awitching between mulitple audio and video devices, and processing of digital audio for surround sound.

  2. basically a receiver will receive AM & FM signals, and has inputs for many different things such as cd player, dvd player, etc..  and is usually an amplifier as well..

a plain amplifier just amplifies any input thats connected to it usually used for dj's and professional applications

  3. Some good answers already.

A 'receiver' used to be called an 'integrated amp'. It contains the amplifier and the electronics package in 1 box.

You can still get systems called 'pre-amp' systems where you have 1 box with all the electronics, and you add in an external amplifier (2, 3, 5 channels).  This lets you slowly upgrade just the amplifier sections without tossing out the electronics.  These are found on higher-end music systems.

Check out www.outlawaudio.com  This is a internet-upstart that can sell you a pre-pro system that rivals a mid-range receiver.  It's more wiring and more shelf space - but some people like this stuff.

  4. A receiver is basically an amplifier with a built-in tuner and preamp.  An amplifier needs a preamp to be able to adjust the volume to the speakers.
