  1. Sort of like the difference between a forest and a tree.  The forest is made of different trees, just like a rock is made of different minerals.  Sometimes a small forest is mostly one tree type, just like sometimes a rock is mostly one mineral type.    Not sure if that helps, but it is worth a try.

  2. A rock is composed of minerals; minerals are naturally-occuring, specifically-composed, inorganic, homogeneous, solid substances that compose rocks.

  3. The definition of a mineral includes four components: it must appear in nature and therefore not be artificial, it must be inorganic in origin, it must have a definite chemical composition, and it must have a crystalline internal structure

A rock can be composed of various minerals

  4. A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic, crystalline substance.  That means things like quartz, diamond, pyrite, and topaz are minerals.  They are more or less always the same.  With few exceptions, a mineral will always have the same crystal structure, color, hardness, and chemical formula.

By this definition, ice is a mineral but coal is not.

A rock is composed of one or minerals.  For example, granite is typically composed of a mixture of minerals such as quartz, feldspar, mica, and amphibole.  Some other rocks, such as sandstone, are composed of only one mineral - quartz.

A rock always contains minerals, but a mineral never contains rocks.

    Hope that helps!
