  1. I know a few facts

The football as used in rugby union. The ball used in rugby union is a prolate spheroid essentially elliptical in profile. Traditionally made of brown leather, modern footballs are manufactured in a variety of colors and patterns. A regulation football is 28–30 cm (11–11.8 inches) long and 58–62 cm (22.8–24.4 inches) in circumference at its widest point. It weighs 410–460 grams (14.5–16.2 ounces) and is inflated to 65.71–68.75 kPa (or 9.5–10 psi). [6]

Rugby league is played with a prolate spheroid shaped football. Traditionally made of brown leather, modern footballs are synthetic and manufactured in a variety of colors and patterns. The football used in rugby league is known as "international size" or "size 5" and is approximately 27 cm long and 60 cm in circumference at its widest point. Smaller-sized balls are used for Mini and Mod versions of the game. A full size ball weighs between 383 and 440 grams. Rugby league footballs are slightly more pointed than rugby union footballs and larger than American footballs.

I dont see why you cant buy an official league Ball in a decent sports shop.

  2. Not convinced there is much difference between league and union balls. I've seen 4 and 8 panel balls used in league. My son's got a Steeden ball and that's the same as his junior league team use. There's companies that sell league equipment (ram, stag etc.) but suspect they're mainly in the north. If it's not convenient to visit them, they sell on-line.

  3. I think there actually the same!! i've never notice or heard of difference between the two!

  4. a rugby league ball has 4 pannels and a union ball has 8 panels because union hav lineouts and need more grip : )

    ; )

  5. Sorry, all the above answers are off the mark (with the exception of Prince of Tides)

The two balls are slightly different shapes. A league ball is slightly thinner & more "pointed" than a union ball, which tends to be a bit fatter & more blunt.

    Hope that makes sense.
