1. I think a counsellor just listen and a psychiatrist diagnoses and give out prescriptions.

Also, a counsellor will listen and make you talk and talk without finding a solution to your probs. A psychiatrist will just give you medications after medications to see which one is best for your needs.

  2. qualifications and ability to give out drugs or not

  3. I dunno

  4. The amount they EARN!!!

  5. A counsellor can be someone who has simply taken a counselling degree or can be someone who has sat many exams and has much experience working for different counselling associations and built up practice. Some counsellors studied psychology at school or university also- so their expertise can vary- the job of a counsellor is mainly to listen to you, to not give advise but help you to open up and make your own conculsions in a confidential, safe environment

A Psychiatrist, is usually someone who is a trained doctor who has gone on to study psychiatry in depth. A Psychiatrist can perscribe medication which a counsellor cannot. A Psychiatrists main job really is to monitor, diagnose and perscribe. A Psychiatrist is usually considered the highest level of qualification in this field

Psychologists are usually those who work with people through the use of treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy and other types of mental health therapies. They can often act abit like counsellors also. But mainly they are interested in using treatments often alongside the drugs perscribed by the psychiatrist or GP

A therapist can be a psychologist or a counsellor- depends as some people will say they are seeing atherapist and it could be either.

    hope this helps

    best wishes

  6. counsellor is a non advisory capacity, normally a person centred counsellor. psychiatrist will normally focus on the here and now problems, specific issues and they can prescribe drugs.

  7. A psychiatrist is actually a medical doctor that can prescribe meds. A psychologist cannot although they are very educated in psychology. A counselor or therapist are educated but not as much as the other two and usually have to work underneath one of them.

  8. There are lots of differences...see below....

    M.D.: Psychiatrist (Doctor of Medicine)

They have gone through medical school and 4 years residency in psychiatry. Can prescribe medication; they may or may not perform general therapy.

Ph.D.: Doctor of Philosophy degree in psychology

This degree qualifies the professional to do research and/or become a practitioner. Many work in academic settings and have a private practice. Are trained in assessment and diagnostics.

    Psy.D.: Doctor of Psychology

Some have counseling practices while others focus on research (perhaps both). They are well trained in psychological testing/assessment and diagnostics.

    Ed.D.: Doctor of Education

Their focus is on developmental and educational assessment, treatment of developmental issues, and educational planning. All are trained in child development, learning disabilities, and general psychology.

Therapist/Counselor....lots of them with different qualifications...as below:

M.F.C.C.: Marriage, Family and Child Counselor

They have an Master of Science degree in counseling. Their specialty is helping families, individuals within families, from a family systems perspective.

    M.F.T.: Marriage and Family Therapist

With a master's degree in social work, these counselors focus on relationships, communication and human development within a family.

    L.C.S.W.: Licensed Clinical Social Worker

These clinicians have a a masters (perhaps doctoral) degree in social work. They use their expertise in social theory to help individuals, families, and couples, and to provide group counseling. Traditionally, they are experts in community resources available. [May also be: L.I.S.W. (Licensed Independent Social Worker) or L.I.C.S.W. (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker) or CSW-C (Certified Social Worker-Clinical]

    L.C.P.C.: Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor

Therapists with this license have a master's degree in counseling, counseling psychology, or other similar designation. Some specialize in individual, couples, family and/or group work. Many enjoy working in all areas of counseling.

L.S.W. and L.P.C. are licensed social workers and licensed professional counselors. They have the same education as their counterparts above. They may be under supervision required before taking the clinical licensing exam or, they may have chosen not to get the clinical license. Some states only honor the L.P.C. (not the L.C.P.C.)

So, as you see there are several different types of therapists even...and even with this therapist with the same degrees can differ based on the type of therapy they do and how they interact with you.

  9. A Counsellor helps people explore their feelings and thoughts. A Psychiatrist is a medical Doctor who treats mental illnesses.

A Therapist is a generic term for all of them, and a Psychologist helps people explore the world around them in terms of their emotional responses to it.

  10. everything that dunrobin said is spot on, plus a difference in salary ill bet.

  11. None whatsoever, They are both a complete waste of space.

  12. A psychiatrist is medically trained to diagnose and cure mental illnesses. A counsellor is trained to listen and advise on emotional problems.
