  1. ILS is more precise.

And what are we talking about? VFR approach? There VOR, NDB and more......

but the main difference is a ILS is more precise.

  2. VFR is for the radio I think

  3. ILS uses the instruments in the aircraft and a signal base on teh ground. VFR (I assume you mean visual apporach) means you look out of the window, and get to the airport using your eyes, no instruments.

  4. ILS stands for "Instrument Landing System," and refers to an electronic system based on radio beams that provides both left-right and up-down position information on the instrument panel without visual reference to the ground.

You can fly an ILS approach without being able to see the runway, down to a certain reasonable distance from the touchdown point.

For lots of information including pictures and diagrams, try an Internet search on "instrument landing system."

VFR stands for "Visual Flight Rules," and refers to operation under conditions in which pilots can safely see the ground and surrounding terrain as well as other airplanes.  A VFR, or visual, approach simply means approaching the runway to land by looking outside to see where you are going.

There are other types of landing approaches available.  Try an Internet search on "air navigation."

  5. vfr you look out the window

  6. You get 3 types of approaches.

    1)  Precision, this a ILS approach. You get a glide-slope that takes you down to the runway and a localizer that keeps you on the center line of the runway.

    2) Non-Precision, this can be VOR, VOR/DME, NDB, NDB/VOR and so on. A VOR will give you a center line. A NDB only gives you direction to the beacon. A DME is a Distance Measuring Equipment.

    3) Visual approach. For this you have to be in fair weather and see the runway to do the landing.

A ILS approach is 5times safer than a Non-Precision approach. The cost off a ILS is to big to put one at every airport that is the only why they are only at bigger airports.

  7. VFR flying is based good visibility(Visible flight rules) IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) is used when fly in bad visibility. ILS(Instrument Landing System) is even better because the system makes it real easy to land. Here on the gulf coast we have times when the fog is so bad you cannot see your hand in front of your face. Thank God for ILS.
