  1. They both live in forested regions of Africa.  Gorillas are larger and feed mainly on the ground.  They eat very rough vegetation and are adapted with a hind gut that allows them to more successfully metabolize cellulose into sugar.  Chimps get much of their food in trees and and eat higher quality foods including fruits, nuts and occasional meat.  They are both knuckle walkers and do most of their traveling as quadrupeds on the ground.  The other apes which are from Asia, orangutans and gibbons, rarely come down to the ground.  Bonobos are very closely related to Chimps and act very much the same except their societies are not dominated by males so are much more peaceful.  Some gorillas live in high mountains while other species are adapted to living in low swampy areas.

  2. Think of 'ape' as like 'cat' -- there are different species of cats: lions, mountian lions, tigers, house-kitties.

Ape is a more general term, including chimps, gorrillas, us, and other species.

Chimps and gorrillas live in Africa.

  3. "Apes" refer to chimps, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans.

Chimps are the closest living relative to humans, they live in Africa. Chimpanzees are agressive and the females are promiscous.

Gorillas also live in Africa and are easily the strongest of the Apes. Gorillas are loyal to each other and generally peaceful, unless the males are fighting for dominance.

  4. The term "ape" includes chimps, bonobos, gorillas, orangutangs, gibbons (and should include us).  Chimps live north of the Congo in Africa, Bonobos south of the Congo.  Gorillas live in East Africa.
