Whats the difference between backstroke and back crawl?

my swim class says that i must know back crawl and at first i thought it was backstroke but then it said that i learn elementary backstroke in the class so i dunno what to do.

  1. Backstroke and back crawl are different names for the same thing, which is when you are swimming on your back and your arms rotate at different times kind of like a windmill. Now, elementary backstroke is when you are swimming on your back, but both of your arms are rotating at the same time.

  2. I would assume "backstroke" and "back crawl" are the same thing. "Elementary backstroke" is not the same thing, but, like the name implies, it is not hard to learn.

    Elementary backstroke has some variations, but mostly it is like swimming breaststroke on your back. The main difference from "back crawl" is that you move your arms in unison (as opposed to alternating arms). The recovery (moving your arms from your sides to above your head) can be either over-water or under water. The kick can be either whip kick or flutter kick.
