Whats the difference between data-rates Mbps and MBps?

(I think 'b'=bits and 'B'=bytes and 8bits=1byte)

But usually when talking about 'internet speed' which one(Mbps or MBps) is used?

Another thing is I'm connected to my campus LAN. And the connecting window says the connection speed is "100Mbps". I suppose this is not the internet speed but the ethernet speed?

So in that case, whats the real internet speed?

  1. Megabits is used when talking about network speeds.  You are right that the 100Mbps is referring to the speed on the ethernet not the Internet.  You will to use a speedtest site to find out how fast your internet connection is.

    Data rate is the rate at which data is transferred between the parts of your M/board memory to cpu.   cpu to southbridge  Hard drive to cpu etc

    Mbps is a higer amount that most isp toss around to make it seem like your connection will be blazing fast. because most people think its mBps.

    the best way to test how fast your connection really is is to go to speedtest.net

    it will give you your upload, download, and ping times.

  4. Yes you are correct, "b" = bits and "B" = bytes, 8bits = 1byte.

    When talking about internet speeds most people will use bytes, usually KiB/s (Kibibytes per second).  1024KiB/s = 1MiB/s.  Internet Service Providers on the other hand will advertise Kbps or Mbps (in bits)

    Correct again, the 100Mbps is the maximum speed of the local network.  A lot of factors affect your current internet speed like.  Use Speedtest.net to check yours, and if you feel like it post your results in the additional details.

    Mine is 7661kbps (≈957.6KiB/s) download and 487kbps (≈60.9KiB/s) upload. (wow, my upload speed is slow)

    I was just rereading my answer.  I noticed I am using KiB and MiB and figured I would explain.  Don't be frightened by the i in the middle, it has nothing to do with Men in Black.   It's pretty much the same as KB and MB except KiB always means 1024 bytes where KB could mean 1000 bytes or 1024 bytes.

    Your math is correct, in a way, but let me see if I can confuse you a little bit more. (I know, I'm evil)

    There are 1024 bytes in a kibibyte (KiB) and 1024 kibibytes in a mebibyte (MiB) so instead of dividing by 1000 you need to divide by 1024.  The only people that use 1000 instead of 1024 are hard drive manufacturers since it makes the drive look bigger.  That's why the terms KiB, MiB, and GiB are now being used more and more often.

    Since...

    MiB/s = Kb/s ÷ 8 ÷ 1024

    Then your speed in MiB/s is

    10694 Kb/s ÷ 8 = 1336.75 KiB/s ÷ 1024 ≈ 1.3054 MiB/s

    I will not quit until you are thoroughly confused...
