  1. kayaking you sit facing the way you are goiing to go and only use your arms.

but rowing you sit backwards ( to the way you are going) you use all you legs arms and body.

in rowing there are 2 types

a skull where you have 2 oars ( they are short)

and where you haev 1 oar they are bigger and you have to do this with at least 1 other person.

try watching the upcoming olympics they ahve rowing.

oh and for fitness and muscle building i would reccommend rowing gives the whole body a work out.

  2. Actually, Oliver's not quite correct on kayaking.  In kayaking, if you're paddling properly, you are using your arms, shoulders and torso muscles to propel your craft and you're using your leg muscles and glutes to stabilize and direct your craft

For a beginner, I think I would get a cheap recreational kayak.

For kayaking, the best workout would probably be in a cheap, short, stubby boat.  The longer and narrower the kayak, the faster it will go...so a short stubby cheap kayak will maximize the amount of effort needed.  Indeed, I have a long boat I use when there are others who might want me to keep up and a short, stubby boat I use when I'm conditioning.  It takes about twice the strokes in my 10' recreational kayak to go the same distance that I do with my 14' touring boat.

  3. Kayaking is alot more fun. You can fish from one or just paddle. They are easier to maneuver and still give you a good work out.
