if you were to be in a job interview for example, and said "OH , the girls I worked with" .......Some people these days take exceptional offence to that!!! If you are talking about the girls from work...use the word ladies from work, or women from work !!!

Other than that, girls are girls, and women are women. There is a pretty clear separation.

People meaning in the general population of man I would say a educated man would call a female a lady provided she displayed the manners and poise of an educated female.

The deference between lady and girl is the same as the difference between gentleman and boy.
