Whats the difference between lcp projectors and dlp projectors?

From a technology perspective, one is based on 3 LDC panels, and the other on a DLP chip and colour wheel (or at the high end ($15K up), 3 DLP chips and no colour wheel).

It used to be that one could say with confidence that the LCD had inferior blacks and lower contrast ratio to DLP, but that isn't quite so sure anymore.

LCD projectors are generally more flexible in mounting requirements (horizontal and vertical lens shift, and wider zoom lens ratio). They are not subject to "rainbow effect" (no colour wheel), but exhibit somewhat greater "screen door effect" than DLP.

DLP are generally less expensive than LCD projectors.

However, as with most generalizations there are alway exceptions.

lcd uses the liquid crystals while dlp is from texas instruments and needs a bulb that puts out the light every so often. dlp uses mirrors to reflect the lights while lcd is liquid

The key difference between LCD and DLP projectors is "native" contrast levels.  The standard for most movie DVDs is 2000:1 and that's where DLP projectors have the advantage without having to resort to aperture or lamp manipulations which often is used in LCD projectors.

If you are looking for high lumens, smooth movie-like viewing, snappy contrast, a knock-out gaming machine, go with at least a  2000:1 contrast DLP projector.  And should you choose an LCD projector, ask the singular question, what's the light engine/LCD panels made of:  organic or inorganic material?  Unfortunately, the "organic" made LCD mirrors do fade over time, and you'll be faced with purchasing either a new light engine or a whole new projector!
