Question:

Whats the difference between livers?

We went catfishing last and stopped at our favorite little store/baitshop. I was looking in the freezer for some cut bait when I noticed there were rooster livers in the freezer. Although I already had my livers in the car I was tempted to get these. So my question is what is the diference between chicken livers bought at Wal-Mart grocery and rooster liver from the bait shop? Is the one bought from Wal-Mart a mixture of female and male livers? And does it make a difference which one is used for catfishing?

  1. We are talking catfish here and I have never known them to be that picky once they locate a bait. To satisfy your curiosity, but a pack and try them. Use two rods with the same hook set up and fish the two  livers on different rods in the same area and let the catfish be the judge. It's cheap, fun and who better to make the decision then the fish? That's where it counts. Tight lines and have fun!!!

  2. Its all the same to myself.

  3. by buying rooster livers, rather than plain chicken livers, all you are doing, is paying higher prices, for the same type of produce.

the catfish, don't know the difference

  4. eh, basically there the same. I dont know of any real diffrences when it comes to catfishing.

  5. Rooster livers are slightly larger, not noticeable enough to a catfish.

The Chicken livers at Walmart are hen and roosters livers that come from factories. They pump the chickens with antibiotics and growth hormones and the chickens live in substandard conditions. When the chickens are slaughtered the parts can be strewn around the factory for long periods.

The bait shop livers are probably from local farms. You should ask if they are. Most local farms don't "pump" there livestock, and they are free from antibiotics, that you could ingest when eating  your fish.

Most importantly if you pay a little bit more for local products, it helps the local economy. It is  really important that your money stays in your community, especially in the current economic climate.

  6. No, buy the cheapest livers.  Sort of like worms, they all taste like "muck", and it's the smell that counts for some fish.  Other fish like to see movement, it's hard to see in the dark water.

Often depends on eating habits of fish, water depth, and temperature.

The bait is just one factor in being a successful fisherman.
