  2. If you are an employee, your ID is your social security number.

    If you are a business, the numbers are issued when you apply for a business tax id number.  These  are usually the same for Federal and State income tax with the exception that  some times the state number just has an extra digit at the end.

    If you are an employer, you will also have an ID for the state unemployment insurance.  Some states use the same number for both state taxes, others require a unique number.
