  1. A new moon is when the moon is between the Earth and Sun.  The Sun illuminates the back, so the part facing us is the 'dark side' for the moment, and we can't see it - usually just an edge or so.  A full moon is when the Earth passes between the Sun and moon - the Earth doesn't block it (except during a lunar eclipse) so we see the moon fully illuminated.


  2. new moon = no visible moon

    full moon = visible moon is full
