Whats the difference between synchronous and async counters?

  1. When we see at the counter design using flip flops, to make an asynchronous counter, the flip flops are connected sequentially.. I mean to say, the out put of one flip flop is connected as the input clock for the next flip flop. But in synchronous manner, the clock of each flip flop is connected to a same input. Go through the links I have given here, u can see the block diagrams.

    So, this makes lo of difference, Synchronous counter's out put is more stable than Asynchronous counter's output. and There the output of the flip flops will not occur at the same time in Asynchronous as there will be a small delay for each flip flop to produce the output, and this output is fed as clock input to the next flip flop it makes further delay for next flip flop..
