  1. the ak74 shoots a 5.45 x 39mm round as opposed to the ak47 7.62 x 39mm round. the ak74 is more accurate too and has a flashider. other than that theyre exactly the same and the ak74 was made 27 years after the ak47 (1974 in case u were wondering)

  2. " AK-47"  is simply an abreviation for

Avtomat Kalashnikova  being named after the inventer "Mikhail Kalashnikov" it was a 1947 model   being one of the best rifle of the time and still prefered many years after, they still continues to mass produde and sell AK-47s many years later even though they were not actually "47" models anymore.  So an AK-74 is actually a variation of the same gun mad in 1974 (27 years later). it's just since 74 47 reversed, they thought it would be a catchy name. as far as comparison though, like anything else with that many years of evolution, almost all aspects of the gun had improved. reloding time, shooting accuracy etc....  HOWEVER....... There were still AKs produced after the 1974 model, however with out the catchy reverse-number-name, they simply called them AK-47 since they wanted people to recognize the name for marketing purposes (wsince the AK had such a reputation by then). and ofcourse after the 1974 model, the AK still continued to improove in the same aspects that it had up intill the 1974 model, so actually your question becomes reversed at that point because the AK-47 is both not as good, and better than the ak-74 in all aspects. ( since it was produced before and after 1974.)   Hope thise helps, I know you didn't want a long drawn out answer, but this is kind of a tricky question. sorry about the long explanation, but hope this helps you better understand.

  3. The AK-47 is 7.62mm while the AK-74 is 5.45mm. other than that, the 74 was developed much later by the same man as the 47 was, Mikhail Kalashnikov. So you would just assume that it is better (in efficiency and reliability) since it was designed later. The fact that the 74 has a lower caliber than the AK-47 (and its predecessor the AKM) means its more accurate not to mention the barrel is reinforced and apparently the front sight base and gas block were redesigned to function better as well. [Wikipedia has all this information and more on it for your reading pleasure, and don't worry its plenty reliable for your needs.] Sorry for making this longer than you were hoping, but i assume its all the information you wanted to know.

  4. An AK-74 is bigger?  Is that the kind of answer youre looking for?  It is definitely bigger than a breadbox.

  5. 74 was designed to be carried in combat vehicles, just like the us m-4.

  6. They are very much alike, but the simplest answer is: about 27 years and a pound and a half. The AK-74 is shorter and lighter.

I hope this answer is short enough for you.

  7. 30 years...

  8. 27

  9. AK-47 was introduced in the late 1940's. The AK-74 was brought out in the early 1970's. It was a substantially improved model.
