Whats the difference between union and non-union movie extras?

Union members belong to SAG (Screen Actors Guild) and carry the benefits it provides. Non-union members don't.

AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) is an union organization which represents performers in the television and radio industry for the most part, having little to do with motion picture representation.

The main difference is pay and working conditions.

A union extra gets overtime after eight hours; non-union gets one flat fee and has to remain as long as they want them.  Depending on the gig, union extras can make about $300/day; non-union, maybe $90.  

Union shoots have to hire a minimum of union extras before they cast non-union extras.

Union movie extras have more rights than non-union extras. They are treated just like (actors). Non-union extras will still be able to get work but, they are not paid as much.
