  1. Red licorice is usually cherry or strawberry flavored, whereas black licorice has the distinct anise flavor that you either love or hate.


  2. Black liquorice contains liquorice extracts (i.e. anise flavored) but red liquorice contain little to no liquorice extract. Typically red liquorice are flavored cherry, strawberry, etc.

It's definitely the flavor and not the texture, though that depends on what brand of licorice you choose.  The red is cherry or strawberry flavor and very sweet.  The black has a more distinct and unique flavor that I think you have to have a taste for, but is not as sweet as the red licorice.
