Whats the diffrence between stages on a clutch?

okay i drive a clutch and im assuming that its just a normel one. but i have friends that have like " stage 3 " or "stage 5" or " racing clutches" whats the diffrence between them?

  1. The higher "stage" clutches can handle more horsepower and torque... some may be sinlge disc, others may be multiple disc, and most performance clutches grab and shift harder, also they may have less diameter to reduce rotating mass, which effectively increases horsepower, and be made from different materials such as ceramics, or a carbon friction material, which makes them stronger, where as a stock clutch is usually made from asbestos for the friction material


  2. just means the type of clutch and the amount of engine power it can handle (the names stage 2, 3 etc are just advertising names )

    so if upgrading engine power to over that of the stock clutch then at high power the stock clutch may not be able to handle the power coming off the engine
