Due to chances of fraud you would only want to use your credit cards at the resorts, for excursions or at big name places.  For smaller merchants, even if they do take credit cards you never know if it is safe, don't take the chance.  Use US$ for almost everything.  We have been here twice and on excursions both times and never went anywhere that they refused US$, they love them.

U. S. will work however you should still change things into Pesos especially if you are away from tourist areas.  Outside your resort smaller bars and restaurants may not take credit cards.  You can check the rate below.

Hi Nicole,

Well it is best to have some US Dollars and your credit (visa)

cards to use when needed. At the airport you need to pay "cash" when arriving (10 us p.p.) and at the departure (20 us p.p.). For the rest of your stay you can redraw money from the cashier (pesos dominicanos) so you don't loose to much in exchange rates. Excursions are always priced in us dollars but you can pay them or in dollars or pesos. TThe excahange rate is 33.60 pesos for 1 dollar( today).
