I don't recommend DreamWeaver - too many bits for a beginner. I like to use Geocities    http://ca.geocities.yahoo.com/    with beginners. You can use your Yahoo account to sign up.

I recommend that you use the Page Wizard to create a page with the single word "Hi!", then flip to html and work up from there.

Basic html is so easy that you will be surprised. Once you have mastered that try a Dreamweaver trial download and try that out.

The way I learned was actually using angelfire back in the day.  I made a basic website in the basic mode, then switched to the advanced HTML mode and just sort of figured out what did what, then if I got lost google something to find the answer.

Get a program like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, CoffeeCup, etc...start designing things in the WYSIWYG editor, then go to the html editor and look at what you did and figure it out.
