  1. Hi Catherine

Measure your house from side to side & also from front to back & multiply the two figures to get the square metes (say if 6metres x 5metres this would be 30 square metres) then buy enough rolls of insulation to do that amount.

Fibre glass insulation like rock-wool is good & comes in 4inch or 6inch thickness but be careful as it can make you come out in a rash as it is very itchy so put on protective disposable boiler suit to do it.

Then just roll it out over the existing (it doesnt matter if it is up & down a bit as long as you keep the rolls edge to edge so that it is like a big blanket ) that will help to keep the heat in.

  2. use the floor area in your upstairs rooms that will give you the rough size of attic space, always get a little more insulation than you need[you can always take complete rolls back,as long as you keep the receipt]B&Q are doing a great deal soon,3 for the price of 2,about a 4inch thickness is fine.

  3. measure the length and width and multiply to get the area in square metres, you need about 6" depth.
