  1. After you've used the weed whacker to trim the grass away close to the ground, put down a strip of mulch or pine needles to make a sort of border next to the fence.  It will not keep grass from coming back, but the mulch will make trimming the grass out much less tedious.

I made the strip just wide enough so that the wheel of the lawn mower runs along the edge.  Once or twice a year, I pull the mulch back, trim or pull the new runners, and refresh the mulch.

You do not need chemicals to kill out the grass this way.

  2. Get a weed-whacker.  It is much easier than hand trimming the grass by the fence.  I recommend that you cut a planting bed about 12-18" deep along the entire length of the fence.  You can plant perennials or just ground cover in it and when you mow the lawn, you don't have to get close to the fence.

  3. weedwacker.

  4. Use grass shears

  5. weedwacker and edge trimmer.  Then spray along the fence with grass killer.  when it's good and dead, dig it out from both sides of the fence.  continue to spray regularly to control it.
