  1. A gelding (castrated male horse) or a spayed mare (yes, mares CAN be spayed) It's not about being 'easy to tame'..it's about hormone and testosterone levels. Stallions have the highest testosterone level, whereas mares are governed by estrogen.

    I would never recommend a stallion to someone who hasn't had many years experience with them.

    A gelding will usually have a nice tractable temperment. Many mares also have great temperments, although they do have seasons, and sometimes can be a handful then.

    Also, a Quarter horse can explode into a 42 mph gallop..from a standstill, and keep it up for 1/4 mile, or about 400 yards.

    A properly trained racingThoroughbred can run at 42 mph for up to 2 miles.

    (Though I wouldn't suggest making yours, or anyone else's horse sustain such a speed at that distance)
