  1. the sr71 holds that title. the twin ramjet engines have not been tested to their maximum output yet and with all of the air craft retired that will not happen. a very interesting aircraft. did you now that they do not fill the fuel tanks up until the craft is in flight. the tanks just leak too much until they warm up.

  2. The sr-71 is the fastest airplane in the world, the X-15 is the fastest manned aircraft in the world, and the X-43 is the fastes unmanned aircaft in the world.

  3. Indeed it is the SR 71, nick named the Blackbird.  It was produced in the 60s as a spy plane.  It could fly the entire length of California in 10 minutes!  It flew so fast that friction on the skin caused the inside of the plane to heat up to over 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The crew had to wear special suites to keep from frying.  I could fly s high that it was kissing outer space.  NASA still flies one for research.  It was big and black and was the first true stealth jet.  Although not as stealthy as today's F22, Raptor. It was a Mach 3 aircraft. No one has bested it yet.

The X-15 was rocket powered aircraft and was not an airplane at all.

  4. SR-71 Blackbird reaching 3,086 MPH and over 90,000 Ft.

  5. SR-71 Blackbird.

  6. Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

The space shuttle is not an airplane and the X-15 flew the highest not the fastest

  7. It has been proven by nasa that an umanned aircraft called the X-45 is the fastest ever aircraft with abilities of aquiring top speed  of mach 9.8, almost 10times the speed of sound....The engine of the X-45 was primarily fueled with hydrogen.

The fastest manned winged vehicle is the NASA Space Shuttle but it is unpowered when landing.

    .

The fastest manned winged vehicle ever to fly under it's own power was the X-15. During flight number 188 of the program on  October 3, 1967 test pilot Pete Knight pushed the X-15 to a speed of 4,519 mph at an altitude of 36.3 miles. Maximum speed: Mach 6.70 (4,520 mph) The X-15 was carried aloft under the wing of a B-52 and like the space shuttle landed unpowered.

    .

The SR-71 Blackbird was the fastest airplane to take off and land under it's own power.  Maximum speed: Mach 3.2+ (2,200+ mph)  It has been retired and is no longer in service.
