I always wait, till later as I have a late flight leaving Oakland back to LA, I just hit the 37 back to the 80.. You can go to their website they have a zillion directions on their. About 15 of us from down here are going we have a motorhome rented that will be for us at the track, thank god that part was easy, as my Uncle who is a Nascar offiical hates coming to Calif. I so not know where you are from but my friends from Colorado that are coming out went to AAA the auto club they mapped it all out for them.. I love this place, we plan a lot of winery tours as well..( yep I feel a wine headache already but it will be fun)   Have a great time, theres lots to do in Sonoma, great place..

Do people actually PAY to go watch a road course race in person?  

You miss enough on TV b/c of the turns and hills, I can't imagine being able to must of anything at the track (unless you are in the Goodyear Blimp)
