Whats the green dot on the back of a quarterbacks helmet for?

It's a practical joke, in small print it says "Kick Me"

It signifies which player is "miked up" only one player on defense and one player on offense can have it on the field at once. The quarterbacks are miked to the offensive coordinator who are usually up in the booths getting a birds eye view of everything. The defensive player is miked to the defensive coordinator to receive the upcoming play to run on defense...blitz, play man, play zone or any combination of those

Its to show the Officials that he has a radio in his helmet to receive plays.tips.advice from the coaches.

also if one team loses its radio then so does the other

and defensive players have them too.

It designates which of the helmets are 'miked'.  The QB and the captain of the defense have mikes in their helmets.  The green dot indicates which one that is.
