  1. The entire Louisiana coast (and beyond) was once marshland, which as the previous person noted protect it from hurricanes and harbored many species of flora and fauna that are now mostly gone.  The Miss River was actually "straightened out" beginning in the late 1800s by the Army Corps of Engineers--the purpose was to speed the transit of boats up and down the Miss.  Prior to that, the delta worked as it should have as the water flowed more slowly.  After the straightening, the water flows faster and disrupts the delta ecology.  Much of the delta was drained and make into Lake Pontchartrain, which IS part of the explanation of the delta region.

It was formed over millions of year from the Miss River going into the Gulf of Mexico.  Yes, you may have heard of Hurricane Katrina?  THAT you can google, I hope.

  2. The delta has always acted as a buffer for New Orleans against hurricanes.  The natural marsh and grassland would slow the hurricane winds before they reached the city.  It worked well until 2005 when Hurricane Katrina aimed its might on New Orleans and caught the city off guard.

New Orleans is below sea level.  Levees holding back the Mississippi River broke and all h**l broke loose.  The delta protected the existence of New Orleans for hundreds of years.  Not this time.
