  1. It all started in 1961 and 1962 with GM & Ford 427 motors in their  Chevrolet Impalas and Galaxies. In 1963, Lee Iaccoca and John DeLorean came up with the Mustang brain child. Not to be out done, Chrysler came out with 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury with the 426 Max Wedge. About the same time, Carroll Shelby was sponsored by Ford to build the 427 Cobra. 1964 Ford Fairlane 427 CID, by Detroit Tubing, by Ford for drag racing.

He had already built the 289 Cobra in 1963. Not to be out done, GM came out with the Pontiac GTO & Lemans versions. 1965 & 1966 were dead years. In 1967 & 1968, Chrysler started putting the 426 Hemi in Belvedere's, Satellites,& Roadrunners. GM was putting 421 CID motors in Bonneville's.GM was putting 396 & 427 Motors in Camaros.

These were the years of the "Car Wars". It lasted until 1970.

Oh, I forgot the AMC "Scrambler", and Javelin. 390 Cid Motors in light cars, and Olds 442.  Insurance rates killed the Muscle Car.

The Big 3 sold tons of these cars because of what is now NASCAR and the NHRA. People "Had to have them". Need for Speed.

  2. Style, Power and innovation.

  3. Much of the 60's was all about power and the muscle cars.

It's also the last decade when Detroit reigned supreme ( before the imports starting getting a foothold and eroding the Big 3 customer base ).
