  1. There are two forms of competition; those to find jobs with decent pay, and the competition resulting in getting the best picture amongst a group of photographers covering the same subject.

Photojournalists may not be competing as much for pay, but the nature of the job creates a lot of competition for quality.  Papparazzis compete for everything: pay, access and respect. Unless one is a natural celebrity hound, it doesn't make economic sense.

As the number of paying assignments dwindles with the advent of high end point and shoot technology, it would be best to seek a photographic career where individual interests drive the photographer and where pay isn't the primary focus.

  2. it doesn't take much to be a portrait photographer at a department store.

  3. photo journaling and papparazzi is extremly challenging and competitive. the papparazzi either work for magazines/newspapers or are idependent "freelance", the same with photo journaling. even photogrpahing wedding or school kids is competition for clients.

if you want a non/less competitive photography job you need to work at a department store photo studio like sears or wal-mart

  4. none, really photography is a really hard field to get into, whether you're opening your own studio or being a papparazzi or taking pics for a mag.
