I was wondering what age do I have to be for the doctor to keep everything I say completely confidential (in ireland) from my parents?

  1. I'd assume very young.

In England you can get an abortion at any age and they can't tell your parents.

    Google would be better...

  2. I am pretty sure after 16 it is all confidential, you can go anytime on your own though and they wont tell your parents unless there is a definate need, but i know it is not any older than 16. Might be younger.

  3. I would say any age that you are capable of making the appointment at and don't need a lift from you parents.

Anything you say to a doctor is confidential and they cannot say anything to your parents if you don't want them to.

However, if you do tell them something then they are obliged to act on it but they can do nothing without your consent. Even if a crime has been committed, they need your consent before they do anything.

  4. If you're in Northern Ireland I would guess it would be 16, the same as in the UK. A 16 year old for example could get a prescription for the pill without their parents consent and without them being informed. You can visit the doctor on your own at any age, but if you're younger than 16 your details may not be treated as confidential depending on what you're going for. If you're under 16 and your parents are abusive your doctor would have a responsibility to ensure your safety and involve social services in order to help you. If you're over 16 you can leave home if you want and access social / supported housing etc.

I'm not sure about the rest of Ireland though.

  5. if you think you are old enough and mature enough to book an appointment by yourself then you can go by yourself
