  1. There's no minimum amount where you CAN file, but there's a minimum where you are required to file.  Tina above has given you a summary of when you are REQUIRED to file


  2. It depends if you are a dependent or not-- see the IRS site for some clear charts.

    Single, under 65---  $8,750

    Single dependent, --- $850 unearned income, or $5,350 earned income. (You are a dependent if someone pays more than 1/2 of your upkeep, and so you don't claim even 1 deduction.)

    There's more details, but that's the bottom line.

    If your employer withheld taxes, you will get them all back if you made below these totals. Of course, this year, you have to FILE to get ANY of the... whatzit, rebate.
