  1. Well, without knowing any of the details of your situation (including the size of your bill), that's kind of impossible to say.

Call the hospital, there will be someone in their billing department who can answer that question for you.

I had a miscommunication with a hospital once: they lost record of my payment, and sent me to collections.  I went in and spoke, respectfully, with their Billing and Accounts Receivably department, and we worked everything out to everyone's satisfaction.  The hospital called off the collections agency, and I had no dings against my credit rating.

So call the hospital, and find out what kind of deal you can work out with them.

  2. There is no set lowest amount. You will need to work this out with the collection agency. Remember, they will add interest to your balance (as allowed by law) so it's best to send as much as you can. You can send your payment to the hospital. The hospital will send notification to the agency. But unless the agency has an agreement in place with you, they could continue to contact you (and perhaps with some vehemance). They CAN show this bill as a ding on your credit also.

  3. If it has gone to collection, that means the hospital has sold the debt.  You will have to deal with the collection agency.

  4. You can send in any amount you can afford. If the hospital or collection company accepts it, then you are not in default. Of course they want their money all at once, but send what you can and leave it at that. Now if you do begin paying don't stop. You can get into a worse situation if you do that. Also don't listen to all that c**p about losing your job, damaging your credit, etc. It's all a bunch of tactics used to scare you.
